Not looking forward to the pressure of Valentine's Day? Don't worry, not all of our dates have gone that well in the past. Here's a few nightmares from the team at HQ. I don’t think they approved... My worst experience was booking a hotel room for a valentine’s weekend.... then having to go and collect some expensive, sexy and let’s face it inappropriate lingerie that got left behind. My girlfriend at the time demanded I go and collect it. There were 3 staff at reception and they thought it best to hand it over straight to me without putting it in a bag or anything...I don’t think they approved...Graham R – Head of Photography I didn’t have the funds to cover it When I was (much) younger, after a date, we decided to get a hotel room, leaving said girl in the car outside, I went in to inquire on the price. I came back out telling her how much it was going to cost, not telling her that I didn’t have the funds to cover it until we landed at reception. Surprisingly it ended pretty well, she paid.Anonymous gent (now at least)Bucket of chicken for 1So after a period of singledom I was set up on a "Blind Date” by a friend. She worked with a guy who she thought we’d have quite a bit in common. After much hesitation I decided that there was nothing on TV that night and the fridge was bare so spruced myself up and decided to go. I got on the Tube and got off at the stop only to find that my ex-partner was stood waiting across from the station. I text my friend and asked what the guys name was and to my dismay I was set up on a blind date with my ex-partner. I swiftly made a quick exit and got the tube home… stopping off for a bucket of chicken for 1. Fail at Life. James P – DesignerAnti-Valentine’s Day night out awkward Valentine’s Day story happened when I was 18. I’d been dating my first boyfriend Sam, for about 9 months but he was away with uni so was missing our first Valentine’s Day together.I decided to have an Anti-Valentine’s Day night out with some friends instead but text Sam confessing for the first time how much I loved him & how much I loved spending time with him. Unfortunately in my drunken state I text the wrong person & sent the message to my friend Sam from college who I’d become friendly with. He text me back the next morning saying how glad he was that I’d brought this up because he has feelings for me too! Joel C – Buyers Administrator I hid it in a bush I bought a box of chocolates for my date but as I waited outside the venue, I could see him walking towards me, empty handed. Cringing, I did what any sane girl would do I hid it in a bush and fished it out on my way home, giving it to my dad when I got there!Anonymous cute creativeMTV style music show A guy (who I wasn’t dating) filmed and starred in an MTV style music show DVD. Between emo videos, introduced by him and his mate, the words ‘I love you’ subliminally flashed on screen in a red dripping blood like text. Needless to say this was a little too emo for me!Anonymous indie kid
boohooMAN meet Zibra
Donatella (Versace) is already a fan; they’ve played Glasto and opened for other MAN favourite Years & Years. Catch them on tour this spring and grab the album EP3000. Read what they say about inventions, music and more and check out the video below. 1. Can you describe your sound for anyone who hasn’t heard you yet? We’re basically pop put through some meat grinders, with a seasoning of cut-up samples and synths.2. How did you guys meet?We met in London a couple of years ago via mutual friends. I (Sam) have known Ben for a long time -we had been performing together in previous projects, and we met Russ via another friend at a party.3. You lived in squats on moving to London, how was that? Did this inspire you to write?Yeah, well I haven’t gone much up! Property guardianship now, keeping people like me 2/3 years ago out, but If I get a class room that I can ride around in for less than a flat share, I mean to me it seems like a no brainer?I used to be into bands such as Blur and Nirvana, Mix that in with your parents listening to 80’s synth pop and a bit of 90’s dance music and there we have it. 4. What/Who were your influences growing up?Funny thing is I went to my grans last weekend and cracked open an old box I had there, and it was full of metal cd’s, obviously a part of my listening childhood I’ve blocked out. I used to be into bands such as Blur and Nirvana, Mix that in with your parents listening to 80’s synth pop and a bit of 90’s dance music and there we have it.5. Describe a typical day for you.I’d wake up and possibly go to the BMX track unless it’s raining. Today I’m going to get out the guitar and have a bash around, plug some synths together and maybe do some soldering of an idea I’ve made up in my head during the night. I’m also gonna write some new lyrics. After all that I’ll go to the pub, then forget my bag in the pub, panic for a second because it’s got my go-pro and notebook in it, so have to go back to the pub to pick it up, but then you get stuck there for another drink obviously. Then make tracks home and cry for a bit. That’s a typical day. go to the pub, then forget my bag in the pub, panic for a second because it’s got my go-pro and notebook in it, so have to go back to the pub 6. Sam, you make musical equipment from discarded junk; very Iggy Pop! Was he your inspiration? Have you used any of this equipment on the album?I had no idea that Iggy Pop did that?! I might have to AskJeeves it to confirm! For the album a lot of this stuff has made it in, I mean its inevitable, my laptop isn’t powerful enough to run a load of plugins, so just have to record, cut it up and plop it straight on.Ha! It's true! He does! Something to talk about at least if you ever meet?! 7. You’ve clearly got an eye for invention… what would you class as the best invention ever made?I’m working on a rechargeable picture right now….. shhhh. You basically pop it in a camera, it takes the picture, lasts for a few hours and then disappears again, only to be reused. Absolutely no commercial application but hey whatever, I'm happy living rough. Money would just fuel the hoarding process anyways.8. What does your writing process consist of?I tend to make a few loops, work some chord changes in and fancy sounds for an hour, then turn it up, and ride around the room on my bike singing until I get the crux of the song and the meaning, before recording.9. What can we expect to hear from the album? All manner of sounds and progression. It’s all over the place, in the best possible way.10. What can we expect to see this year from you guys?New songs, an album, more live shows! A bigger synth, and these rechargeable photos in pound shops.Don’t go to the hairdressers 11. Any style inspirations? Describe your style in 3 words?Don’t go to the hairdressers. Always try and do it yourself and take that safety pin out of your ear, you’re not in college anymore. Oops that’s more than 3 words. Got a bit carried away. Thanks guys! We'll heed your comments on the safety pin!
Ronaldo V Bale
Ahead of tonight’s big game, we’ve put Bale and Ronaldo head to head to see who is really the best. And by best, we’re talking style not skills…Starting with hairstyles... Both the Real Madrid players have experimented with these over time. Bale currently rocks a controversial man bun, which is the new marmite of haircuts. Although Ronaldo has had some pretty spicy looks over the years (including bleach blonde highlights) his current style is more low key. The four time Golden Boot winner reportedly got two lines cut into his hair to show support to a young cancer patient, to represent the scars left after an operation which he apparently paid for. We're actually a big fan of marmite Bale, but we're sorry Ronaldo's charitable tribute wins this one. 1-0 Ronaldo Now onto their team kits... As both of their kits are red and pretty similar, we've opted for their away kits to mix it up a bit. All of the countries have upped their games this year when it comes to their kits, we just wish we could say the same about the football (cough cough). Starting with Wales' black, grey and green gear, we're going to be honest and say we're not a huge fan. It's a little too dull for our liking, especially in comparison to their stylish red and white home kit. Now onto Portugal's combination of turquoise, black and red... On paper those shades don't sound great together, but on the pitch they kind of work. We think both teams should stick to their home kit styles, but for this, Portugal's choice of brighter colours takes the win! 2-0 Ronaldo Off the pitch... Ronaldo is definitely as smart off the pitch as he is on... Although we're not sure about that cream and white suit?! Bale keeps it casual and to be fair you can't really go wrong with a pair of chino shorts and a grandad collar top. We're all for less is more, so Bale this one goes to you. Results: Ronaldo 2 - 1 Bale Good luck tonight lads!
The Croft Off | Jolie vs. Vikander
Don't deny it Lara Croft, even pixelated in the original 1996 game, was one of our first crushes. Not only was she undeniably hot, she had some big assets: beautiful, intelligent, athletic and she knew her way around a gun or two...So when it came to bringing this character to life there was a tall order to fill and Angelina Jolie was the perfect answer. Action star ready she only upped the anti on our Lara Croft crush. Last night it was announced that Alecia Vikander will be taking on the role of Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider Reboot, and we don't know what to think! We can't deny she's a stunner and she's already proved to have Croft qualities in Ex Machina: intelligent and beautiful - even as a robot! But can she compete with Jolie? It's time for a Croft Off!Bad Ass LevelJolie can curve bullets in The Wanted, kicks ass against her future hubby in Mr and Mrs Smith and proves she's the best secret agent in Salt -and all with so much sass. Vikander may not have as many action movies under her belt as Jolie but when she does she doesn't mess about. The moment when she get's her own back on her creator in Ex Machina is down right cold, she even leaves the good guy behind -just ruthless. Jolie 1-0 Vikander The LookVikander draws you in with that cute look but you can't let those innocent eyes fool you - poor Caleb didn't see it coming. This good girl gone bad look totally works for us. But Jolie is pure wild child bad girl with those tats and her famous lips - we don't stand a chance against those features. Jolie 2- 1 VikanderWifey MaterialHumanitarian, mother of 6 and Oscar winning actress Jolie has it all. Too bad we can't really compete with hubby Brad Pitt... awkward. Vikander shows of her beauty and brains in The Danish Girl and Ex Machina and and also has the hidden skill of being a professional ballet dancer. But more importantly she's single! Vikander Wins! Jolie 2 - 2 VikanderActually we can't make our minds up, who is the true Lara Croft? You decide on social: Tweet us @boohooMan #CroftOff
