boohooMAN meet Ady Suleiman

My man Ady is in another lane. His voice is something else. It's amazing." Joey Bada$$

He's just finished his UK tour and his single 'What's The Score' featuring Joey Bada$$ is out now. So what better time to catch up with the singer, songwriter hailed as a one to watch by the likes of Beat and Hunger TV.

1.    Can you describe your sound for anyone who hasn’t heard you yet?

My sound hmm… I guess it’s a unique blend of R’n’B, Reggae, Hip-Hop and Soul, but it’s really difficult to describe and categories because it depends on the song. The song dictates everything and some songs take more influence from different genres. I would say that what is key and also what unifies my music is my voice.

2.    How’s the tour going?

Fuckin’ sick! I have loved it so much. I have felt so much love over the course of the tour, it has been a great experience and I'm just excited to keep growing, performing and putting out more music.

3.    You collaborated with Joey Bada$$, any more collaborations on the horizon?

For sure, just can’t say much about them just yet. I got a remix coming with Winta James, which sounds dope so excited to drop that.

4.    Who would be your dream collaboration, dead or alive?

Jimi Hendrix and/or Bob Marley, even to sing BV’s for them would be ridiculous!

5.    Who inspires you musically?

The big one is probably Amy Winehouse but so many artists have inspired me. Such as Stevie Wonder, Lauren Hill, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Bob Marley, Chet Baker and Ray Charles.

6.    How do you start to write a song? What’s your process?

It always starts with melody or chords first so basically music before any lyrics, that’s what comes more naturally to me. I love writing lyrics but I wouldn’t say I’m a natural wordsmith, I definitely find improvising melodic hooks easier. So once I have my melodies and chords, I then start to think about lyrics and what I want to say, that’s what usually takes time to do.

7.    Highlight so far?

Winning Giles Peterson’s Breakthrough Act of the Year has been the highlight so far. It’s my first and only award in music and to get it from Giles, a guy that I have listened to on radio for years was dope. Very un-expected which made it all the better.

8.   Who are you listening to at the moment?

Anderson. Paak and Donny Hathaway are on repeat at the moment. I just checked Kendrick Lamar’s new album it’s alright, definitely need to give it another listen but I’m a huge fan of all three especially Donny.

9.    Who or what are your style inspirations?

Good question. I’m not sure I have any, I usually just clock what people are wearing in my normal day to day a lot of old dudes wear the sickest hats and shirts haha! I love vintage clothes and dungarees so I guess I fuck with 90’s fashion but there is a thin line between looking class and looking stupid. I also love to put a suit on when the occasion is right.

10.    Describe your style in 3 words?

Hand-me-downs

11.    What can we expect to see next?

You will probably catch me this summer playing some festivals like Park Life in Manchester, I also want to travel to Europe and do some shows out there. I will be dropping my next single very soon, just re-shooting my video and then the album will be out this year also so lots going on.
